Why PGA Jr. League is Great for Non-Golfers

Palo Duro Creek Golf Course welcomes kids of all skill levels and from a variety of sports

Our PGA Jr. League program at Palo Duro Creek Golf Course is centered on one main purpose: to grow the game that we love so much!  Our program is 48 kids strong, and all practices and matches take place at our facility.

Of these 48 kids, I can only think of a few that have chosen golf as their only sport.  Most kids in our area play seasonal sports (football and volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball and soccer in the spring and summer).  Where and how do they find time to fit golf into their busy schedule?  The answer is simple – it is up to us to work with their families’ schedules.

The very first thing that we do before our season starts in mid-April is have a parent meeting.  We introduce ourselves to parents and families, explain what to expect during the season, and determine the practice and match schedule based on what works for their busy schedules.

Now that we have the players, what can we do to make sure they have fun and want to keep playing golf?  PGA Jr. League is a DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM!  Make no mistake about it.  We are taking non-golfers and trying to make sure they stay with this game, so FUN is our top priority.  During practices, we include as many games as we can, like who can chip it closer or who can putt it closest to the hole from 40 feet.  Whether it is on the range or on the putting green, making practice fun while learning is the key to keeping their attention.

The same thing can be said on the golf course.  How do we make it fun?  During PGA Jr. League games, we always try to pair our better players with those that are still learning and improving.  The format itself is perfect!  Playing a scramble makes sure that everyone feels included. Even if a player’s shot is never chosen, he or she gets to hit or putt a it ball everytime.  We set up our tees to make sure every player can feel included and be successful.

At Palo Duro Creek Golf Course, we welcome (and seek out) non-golfers who play in other sports, and our program is better for it.  Everyone wants to be a part of a team, and PGA Jr. League is a great team to be on!
